Glenfarclas Distillery

Glenfarclas wurde bereits 1835 gegründet und befindet sich seit 1865 im Besitz der Familie J. & G. Grant. Damit ist sie ist eine der wenigen Destillen Schottlands, die seit mehreren Generationen im Familienbesitz ist. 1890 traten beide Grant Söhne ihr Erbe an und gingen eine Partnerschaft mit den Pattison Brothers aus Leith ein, in deren Blend ein Großteil der Produktion von Glenfarclas floss. Gleichzeitig wurde sie in Glenfarclas-Glenlivet Distillery Co. umbenannt.
Bereits ein Jahr danach kam der Absturz für die Destillerie, da die Pattisons wegen eines betrügerischen Bankrotts ins Gefängnis mußten. Glenfarclas verlor mit seinem Partner auch seinen größten Abnehmer. Mehr schlecht als recht schaffte es die Brennerei in der Folgezeit unter dem neuen Namen J & G Grant & Sons zu überleben.

Obwohl Glenfarclas eine private Destillerie ist, ist sie kein kleiner Betrieb. Mit ihren sechs Brennblasen, übrigens den größten der ganzen Speyside, können erhebliche Mengen Whisky hergestellt werden. Die Glenfarclas Destille hat ein Produktionsvolumen von 3.000.000 Liter.

Die Destille ist bis heute im Besitz von J&G Grant International.

Glenfarclas Whiskys sind mächtig, sehr komplex, malzig und sherrylasstig.
Sie eignen sich sehr gut als Digestif.

*Die Geschichte von Glenfarclas reicht bis 1836 zurück. Seit 1865 ist die Destillerie im Besitz der Familie J. & G. Grant. (Die Familie ist nicht oder nur sehr entfernt mit den anderen Whisky produzierenden Familien dieses Namens verwand und besitzt keine anderen Brennereien oder Abfüllfirmen.) Da nun bereits die sechste Generation im Unternehmen aktiv ist, sind die Aussichten für die unabhängigste aller Brennereien wohl gut. Glenfarclas Whiskys gehören zur Spitzenklasse in Speyside, auch wenn sie nicht so bekannt sind wie einige ihrer Nachbarn.
Die Brennerei Glenfarclas (>>Tal des grünen Grases<<) liegt in der Nähe des Dorfes Marypark, nur eine Meile vom Spey entfernt. Hinter ihr steigen heidebewachsene Hänge zum Ben Rinnes an, von dem die Brennerei ihr Wasser bezieht. Die Gerste wird in der Umgebung angebaut. Einige Gebäude stammen zwar noch aus den Anfangsjahren, die Brennerei ist aber hochmodern, und ihre Brennblasen sind die größten, die man in der Speyside findet.*

*When Alfred Barnard published his ground-breaking book on distilleries in the UK in 1887, he devoted but one page to Glenfarclas and he did not seem overwhelmed by what he saw.
At that time, the distillery had been owned by George Grant for 20 years and his interest was devoted more to the farm than the distillery. A few years after he died in 1890 his two sons soon decided to go into partnership with the Pattison brothers who, with their fraudulent actions, initiated a disaster for the entire whisky industry. From 1905, however, the entire ownership of the distillery was safely back in the hands of the Grant family and has remained so with the 6th generation currently working the business.
The distillery is equipped with a 16.5 ton semi-lauter mash tun and twelve stainless steel washbacks with a minimum fermentation time of 60 hours but on average it is currently 102 hours. There are three pairs of directly fired stills (very rarely seen these days) and the wash stills are equipped with rummagers. This is a copper chain rotating at the bottom of the still to prevent solids from sticking to the copper. At the time of writing, there are 34 dunnage warehouses on-site, with a vintage 1953 as the oldest cask, but come October 2017 there will be another ten warehouses. In 2017, the distillery will produce 8 to 9 mashes per week, resulting in 2.5 million litres of pure alcohol. Glenfarclas single malt has always been highly ranked among whisky aficionados and close to 800,000 bottles is sold annually.
The Glenfarclas core range consist of the 8, 10, 12, 15, 21 and 25 year old, as well as the 105 Cask Strength. There is also a 17 year old destined for the USA, Japan and Sweden. Also in the core range, is the lightly sherried Glenfarclas Heritage which comes without an age statement. The 30 and 40 year olds are limited but new editions occur regularly. An 18 year old exclusive to travel retail was launched in 2014.
The owners quite often make spectacular limited releases and the rarity of the expressions clearly show the impressive selection that they have available in their warehouses. In 2014, the first of six releases in a new range named The Generations Range appeared. It was a 1966 Fino maturation, followed in 2015 by the 1956 Sherry cask. The third bottling, a 50 year old matured in oloroso casks, appeared in spring 2016 and later in the year the final three expressions were launched; a 1981 matured in port pipes, a1986 cask strength and a 40 year old from 1976. Few, if any other producer, have the opportunity to offer six such whiskies in jus two years! Another limited release in 2015 was a bottling to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Grants taking over Glenfarclas. It was named £511.19s0d Family Reserve, being the amount paid for the distillery by John Grant on 8 June 1865. The owners also continue to release bottlings their Family Casks series with vintage ranging from 1954 to 2002. Finally, every year the owners produce special limited bottlings for their biggest markets.*

*Die älteste schottische Brennerei in Familienbesitz gehört seit 1865 der Familie Grant. Damals übernahmen John Grant und sein Sohn die Rechlarich Farm nahe Ballindalloch. Die kleine Destillerie auf dem Gelände wurde zunächst an John Smith von Glenlivet verpachtet. Nach fünf Jahren, als er das Unternehmen verließ, um Cragganmore zu gründen, betrieben es die Grants weiter. Später gehörte es zur Glenfarclas-Glenlivet Distillery Company in Partnerschaft mit den Pattison Brothers aus Leith, deren Bankrott Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts die Brennerei fast mitgerissen hätte.
Umgeben von zehn großen Dunnage-Lagerhäusern ist Glenfarclas kein kleiner Betrieb. Die Brennerei hat eine moderne Mühle und sechs Brennblasen. Sie rühmt sich, als erste Malt-Brennerei eine Fassstärke-Abfüllung angeboten zu haben – Glenfarclas 105 kam 1968 heraus. Damals bezweifelte die Branche, dass es für Single Malt oder überhaupt ein Produkt mit 60 % Alkohol einen Markt gibt.
Kürzlich hat Glenfarclas zehn Jahrgangswhiskys von 1952 bis 1989 in den Handel gebracht. Der Stil des Hauses ist solider Speyside mit ausgeprägterem Hang zu Sherry- als zu Bourbonfässern.*
