Malt Whisky Yearbook 2018 * The backbone of Brown Forman's business is Jack Daniel's – the most sold American whiskey in the world and is in sixth place of all whiskies that are produced. No less than 149 million bottles were sold in 2016. The company has also announced that an extension of the range, Jack Daniel's Tennessee Rye, will be launched in autumn 2017. Other brands in the portfolio include Finlandia vodka, Woodford Reserve bourbon, El Jimador tequila and, since spring 2016, BenRiach Distillery Company with BenRiach, GlenDronach and Glenglassaugh. The company also has an interest in Irish whiskey through the ownership of Slane Irish Whiskey.
The figures for the fiscal year ending April 2017, showed sales slipping by 3% to $3,857m while net profits dropped by 37% to $669m. The last figure is not as alarming as it looks. The large profit from the year before was due to the sale of Southern Comfort. If one compares the profit 2016/17 to the ones for 2014/15, it is still a decrease but only by 2%.
A rumour was floating around in May 2017, that Constellation Brands had made an offer to take over Brown Forman. The comment from Brown Forman CEO Paul Brown Forman is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, 67.4% of its shares are held by members of the Brown family.*
