Jim Murray´s Whisky Bible 2019 – 86 pts: *Nose 20, taste 22, finish 22.5, balance and overall complexity 21.5. Unusual malt. No great fan of the nose but the roughness of the delivery grows on you; there is a jarring, tongue-drying quality which actually works quite well and the development of the inherent sweetness is almost in slow motion. Some sophistication here, but also the odd note which, on the nose especially, is a little out of tune.*

Jim Murray´s Whisky Bible 2021 – 91.5 pts: *Nose 23, an agreeably busy nose: you expect sugars and get it, though in a more nuanced way than you might first have though. Not so much that little sugary encasing that you normally get from rum cask – though it is there – but a much punchier Demerara and mixed spice and even, amazingly, a playful hint of chilli…; taste 23 the usual silk mouthfeel one associates with Balvenie´s standard malt. With the barley still alive and well. But the tannins are up and at you early: nothing aggressive, but enough vanilla to let you know it´s around. The caramelised arrival forms a central plank; finish 22.5, more caramel and spice; balance and overall complexity 23, a different kind of rum style from Balvenie to others they have done in the past, this working far better and despite a slight caramel overdose, much more complexity this time round.*
