Jim Murray´s Whisky Bible 2021 – 94 pts: *Nose 23.5, an unusually crisp bourbon: Demerara sugars vie with corn, a brisk spiciness and even a little salt for top billing. Mint and green apple also makes their mark. Imagine a view for miles around from a hill on a chilled Fall morning, the air crystal clear and still, the shapes and colours ahead of you vivid and undistorted…that is this nose to a tee…; taste 23.5, from such a nose you expect the flavours to be no less precise and sharp. And you are not let down, though a little com oil does now start to have a gentle impact on proceedings. But still it is about those sugars, as well as vanillas which slowly inveigle their way into a position of strength. The whole is a brilliantly salivating pastiche, because if you are not concentrating, you might just for a moment mistake this for a rye; finish 23, despite the oils and growing oaks, this still retains its brown sugar clarity and its small grain complexity rightly to the very end; balance and overall complexity 24, in style this has just about become a stand-alone bourbon, with a crisp character all its own: like a rye, but chiselled from corn. It has been fascinating watching the quality of this brand rise quite dramatically in recent years and now enjoys a consistency and dependability which makes it an easy ‘go to’ bourbon. As for that unique clarity of flavour, have to say I now regularly use this brand to help re-set my taste buds after they have been clattered into submission and disabled by some sulphur-ruined Scotch or Irish. A magnificent every day non-age statement bourbon but boasting a cut-glass rye edge.*
